Why Sailing?

The art and science of sailing is, in and of itself, stress relieving. You can hear the sound of the water gently lapping against the side of the boat as you sail quietly along being propelled by the power of nature.

The sense of accomplishment, having harnessed the powers of nature to achieve one's goals, is enormous. You can always drop anchor and enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of the outdoors.

In the case of a small keelboat, a small, relatively quiet, inexpensive, motor is used to get in and out of harbour; typically only for a few minutes each trip. The running costs for a sailboat are minimal and the initial outlay can be quite small.

Stress

We live in a fast paced and constantly changing environment. If your workplace is an office you are probably bombarded by noisy telephones, printers, fax machines, etc. There are probably frequent interruptions from your boss, colleagues, customers, etc. In a non-office environment, maybe even the home, there are equivalent and/or similar stressors.

To get to, and from, work you most likely had to endure the vagaries of the traffic either as a driver or passenger.

Water has been associated with stress relief for centuries. Both the sound and motion of water have been found to be stress relieving.
